Women of Faith Series: How To Be A Modern Day Ruth

Most of us have heard about Ruth finding her Boaz. Ruth had to put in work and endure before getting her Boaz. The main focus of this story is usually the end result, but not the process she had to go through to get her reward. Here’s my blog on how to be a modern day Ruth!

Have Loyalty

Ruth Chapter 1 starts out with Naomi’s (Ruth’s MIL) husband dying and her 2 sons getting married only for the sons to die as well. Now all you have is 3 widowed wives. Naomi who has lost 3 people and has dealt with a famine sees her circumstance as the Lord dealing with her harshly, so she tells her daughter in laws to return to their mother’s house. Opra kisses her mother in law good bye, BUT Ruth makes the decision to stay. A lot of us face situations where we have the opportunity to take a way out. A way that would make it easier for us. A modern day Ruth however choses to be loyal, ultimately to God. She allows God to direct her path. She choses to have faith in God and depend on him for strength throughout any process. She’s sticking it out with Him!

Put Action Behind Your Faith

So Ruth the Moabitess said to Naomi, “Please let me go to the field, and glean heads of grain after him in whose sight I may find favor.” And she said to her, “Go, my daughter.”
— Ruth 2:2

Ruth is in a tough situation, but she’s not just sitting there praying and believing. She is having faith that someone will show her favor, but she’s also taking the necessary steps to go find that person. If she didn’t put work behind her faith, then all the other rewards wouldn’t have came. Even taking the action to not sit in your depression and awful situation is activating and walking in your faith. Ruth would’ve missed out on growing with God through the process, her blessings, her legacy..everything. When a modern day Ruth is in a tough spot she learns to get better and not bitter, so she can move and manifest the things that God has for her in her life. Ruth knows that faith without works is dead!

Take Instruction and Use Wisdom

So Ruth ended up getting advice from Naomi on what to do in order to have security in her life. Naomi knew that Boaz was a close relative and she knew that according to the law Boaz could marry her. Sharing this knowledge with Ruth allowed her to be blessed in the process. Not only was she instructed, but it was aligned with the bible. A modern day Ruth can be instructed and only takes Godly wisdom. Ruth didn’t commit sin against God, in order to get her reward. It reminds me of Titus 2 on how older women should instruct younger women on how to act.

3 the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things— 4 that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed.
— - Titus 2:3-5

After Ruth follows the instructions, In Ruth 3:11 Boaz mentions how the entire city knows she’s a virtuous woman. He wants to do the right thing and get her married, because he sees her worth. He sees her true character. If Ruth did not take instruction and use wisdom while going through her hardship, she could’ve found herself in sin, destroying the very thing that allowed her to be blessed. A modern day Ruth keeps herself together!

Reap The Reward

After all Ruth had gone through she still had faith. She maintained her heart and didn’t get bitter towards the Lord. She remained loyal to her Mother In Law and God. She took action on her faith. She listened to wise instructions and used the wisdom she received. Lastly, she reaped the reward of everything she endured. A modern day Ruth will always reap the reward of what she goes through, because her work is NEVER in vain. In order to be a modern day Ruth we have to be willing to endure things while maintaining our hope in the Lord. We have to not only have faith, but put in the work as well. We have to learn how to be instructed not just by people, but God. We have to be able to not only have wisdom, but actually use it. Then you will reap the rewards. I’m not just talking about money or a husband. You might get the reward of joy, peace, being content, and having strength to keep going.

In all things remember that God has you covered!

Don’t be bitter, be better!

Continue to walk in your faith!
